Bottled Water Treatment

Bottled-water ozonation is a controlled process step, not a shortcut to source-water quality. Effective integration considers the treated water, filling operation, package and conditions before consumer use.

The Treatment Challenge

Source-water constituents, storage hygiene and filling conditions can affect the final product. Changes in dissolved organics or bromide can alter oxidation demand and by-product formation even when the water looks unchanged.

How Ozone Helps

Ozone can support microbial control in a suitable bottling process. Treatment must be validated for the actual water and packaging, with attention to residual ozone, product characteristics and potential oxidation by-products.

Process engineering

Technical Treatment Approach

Prepared oxygen feeds the generation stage, followed by controlled gas injection and contact before filling. Process flow and dissolved ozone are monitored at relevant points. Contact equipment and tank vents require managed off-gas collection and destruction.

Key Benefits

  • Supports a defined microbial-control step
  • Integrates with supervised pre-filling water treatment
  • Enables process monitoring around filling conditions

System Integration

Source pretreatment may include filtration, activated carbon or RO. Hygienic tanks, piping and filling equipment remain essential; ozone treatment does not compensate for contamination introduced after the validated contact stage.

Engineering & Automation

Bottling-line PLC options can coordinate flow, generator output and filling permissives. HMI trends, residual sensors, alarms and interlocks may prevent operation outside agreed conditions, while remote review can support traceability.

Available depending on system configuration and project requirements.

Important Design Considerations

Base ozone dose, contact time, transfer efficiency and performance on source quality, filling flow, contaminant load and treatment goals. Assess bromate risk where bromide is present, package compatibility and residual behaviour in the finished water.
